Driver Hire is marking the first anniversary of Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) with a notable milestone of its own. The company has now trained 2000 drivers since launching its Driver CPC training offer earlier this year.
However, despite this success, its Chief Executive Chris Chidley is concerned that transport operators are missing one of the key points about DCPC – its value to their business.
“We see DCPC as much more than a box-ticking exercise,” says Chris. “Well trained, fuel efficient and industry knowledgeable drivers add real value to your business. That’s why DCPC is so important, because putting drivers through modules appropriate to their work will enhance their skills and their ability to do their job as efficiently as possible.”
Driver Hire is raising the profile of DCPC with a renewed ‘first anniversary’ marketing effort targeting customers and non-customers alike. The campaign uses a series of email messages and a newsletter to highlight both the value of DCPC and the fact that there are now only four years left to complete the first batch of training.
“Our Ashford office received a booking to train seven drivers within hours of sending out the first message,” says Chris. “That suggests to me that there are plenty of businesses out there that need a little reminder that making a start on DCPC training makes sense.”
Brian Dent is the Transport and Warehouse Manager for Harrison & Clough Ltd, a leading European fixing and fasteners wholesaler. The company operate 43 vehicles, a mix of 3.5 tonne vans and 7.5 tonne trucks. His company opted to start DCPC training earlier this year.
“Most of our drivers are category C. We’re not looking at Driver CPC simply as something that ‘must be done’. To us it’s about investing in our guys to develop safer more competent drivers. In total 45 drivers - mainly category C - attended modules on Drivers’ Hours and Tachographs,” says Brian. “They all came away feeling that they’d learnt something.”
