Teesside cat C+E driver, Mick Simpson, is the latest Driver Hire driver to complete his first 35 hours of Driver CPC training and qualify for a blue card. Mick joins drivers from Bradford and Burton who have already joined this elite club.
“I decided to get on with it because I thought the longer it goes, the more it will cost. I didn't want to get caught up in a last minute rush,” says Mick. “I've been an HGV driver for 25 years but I still learnt things from doing it; mainly on Drivers' Hours and the Working Time Directive.”
Because the Driving Standards Authority (DSA) records HGV, bus and coach drivers together, it’s not possible to calculate exactly how many truck drivers have completed their Driver CPC. However, in total, there are estimated to be up to half a million HGV drivers in the UK. Out of these, only 16,500 drivers have matched Mick’s achievement.
