Initial CPC

There are usually four tests (Modules 1-4) required to gain an LGV licence. You will certainly need to complete all four modules if you want to drive commercially, as you cannot obtain your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) if you have not passed each of the tests.

It is possible to gain a licence to drive a private vehicle, such as a horsebox, by only taking modules 1 and 3. However, these drivers must complete modules 2 and 4 if they then decide they wish to drive commercially. This part of the qualification is sometimes referred to as the ‘Initial CPC’.

Find out more about what’s involved in each of the four modules here, or visit our FAQs page. You can also find out about the ongoing ‘Periodic’ training requirement here.
