Spencer Taylor has been fascinated by trucks since he was a young lad. “From the very first time I heard the sound of air brakes,” he recalls.

He’s now 44, on the books at Driver Hire Cambridge and the proud holder of a Category C+E licence. “Spencer came to us as a van driver and paid for his own HGV training,” says his boss, John Rigg. “He’s well-liked and respected by all our customers. Spencer has a positive attitude to all aspects of the job and is very passionate about his job and working for Driver Hire.”

From first hearing those air brakes, it took Spence a few years and a few career changes to find himself in his dream job. “I worked my way up to area manager job for Martin’s Newsagents,” says Spencer. “I then took on a Costcutter franchise before moving into BMW car sales. I got my first taste of driving for Driver Hire in 2003 when my wife was pregnant and I wanted to have a job based a bit nearer home.”

Following a return to the motor industry for a few years, the call of the open road became too much, and Spencer was welcomed back at Driver Hire Cambridge. “I needed to get some fun back into my life,” he comments. With past van driving experience to call on, Spencer acquired his Category C HGV licence in 2011 and his Category C+E in 2013.

Spencer’s proudest moment: Driving the local Boys’ Brigade float with his wife, Maxine in the passenger seat, his son on the back (in the black curly wig!), whilst his mum, Sylvia and daughter and eldest son, Heather and Jamie, cheer on from the sidelines – as seen in the picture, above.

“I hate being confined in the same workplace, so I really am living the dream,” he laughs. “There’s no other job where you get paid to travel the country. There’s so much demand for drivers I can cherry pick the jobs I want to do. For instance, I got to go to Denmark on one driving job when I had to take a road surveying vehicle back to base to be recalibrated.”

As you might have guessed, Spencer strongly recommends a life in logistics. “It’s a different job to anything else – and it’s essential. Being in the cab gives me time to think about life. And, because you’re delivering things, people are genuinely pleased to see me. From a workplace perspective, modern trucks are really comfortable, I’ve had some of the best night’s sleep in the cab of a trunker. Environmentally, they’re much better than they used to be.

“My proudest driving moment to date was when I was asked to drive the local Boys’ Brigade float in the Saffron Walden annual parade. My youngest son was on the back of the truck, with my wife, Maxine, in the passenger seat. My mum, Sylvia, and my two elder children, Heather and Jamie, were amongst the spectators,” Spencer concludes.
