B+E Familiarisation

With the changes in legislation to towing trailers that came into force in December 2021, drivers with a category B entitlement who passed their driving test from 1^st January 1997 are now able to tow a trailer up to 3,500kg maximum allowed mass and the trailer towing entitlement (category E) is automatically added to a driving licence.

This means that a driver who has little or no experience of towing a trailer or caravan, are now able to drive a trailer without taking a trailer test.

DriveWise’s B+E Familiarisation course is designed specifically for those who will be towing, but who lack the experience or confidence to be safe and legally compliant.

Course objective

The aim of the course is to give drivers who are likely to tow, a better level of knowledge and skill that enables them to operate the vehicle and trailer combination safely.  The course will also ensure the delegate has knowledge of any legal requirements as well as giving confidence in hitching and un-hitching techniques, and load security.

Course content

This practical training course will comprise of the DriveWise trainer discussing the role of the driver and what they will be towing, to ensure the training is tailored to the individuals requirements.

The practical session will cover the following subjects:

• Trailer and vehicle combination weight limits
• Hitching and un-hitching the trailer correctly
• Loading and strapping
• Speed limits
• Stopping distances
• Low speed maneuvering
• Driving ability

At the end of the course, delegates will receive a written report specific to them, providing feedback on their performance and abilities.  The report will also make recommendations of any further training that might be required.

Course duration and cost

Our B+E familiarisation course includes theory and practical sessions, lasts a full-day, and is suitable for up to two delegates.
