Industry and Government cash to improve truckstops

7 March 2024

New showers, new restaurants, improved security and 430 more parking spaces are all on the agenda for truck stops across the UK. It’s all thanks to a joint £16.5m investment by the industry and the Government. The industry is doing most of the financial heavy lifting, providing £10m, with the Government stepping in with the rest.

With a nod to Net Zero requirements, there will also be new charge points for electric HGVs and solar panels installed on driver facilities to lessen the environmental impact.

Announcing the new funding, which is in addition to a £15m package announced in September 2023 and will affect 38 truck stops, Roads Minister Guy Opperman said: “Lorry drivers are the backbone of a successful economy. That’s why we leave no stone unturned when it comes to supporting them as part of our plans to grow the whole economy.”

Declan Pang, RHA Policy and Public Affairs Director added: “We’re delighted to see the Government’s match funded grant scheme being awarded to projects that will make a real difference to the experience of lorry drivers and provide much needed parking capacity to address the well-known shortage of spaces.”
